Things in my mind: Nike vs. ShockU

Nike vs. ShockU

Thursday, September 21, 2006

For this specific blog I chose to compare how a website uses good roll-over effects (Nike.com) and how a website uses bad rollever effects (shocku.com). First the use of good roll-over effects. Nike has use of these all over there website starting with the first page. The rollovers are very new age and modern. Its nice how the link turns just a slightly different shade of grey instead of some crazy color. Then in the home page is where it really shines. They use rollovers with each of the four links, but the links are not just text, pictures are incorporated within it. As you rollever the link, it becomes illuminated. Really cool. Also at the bottom of the page, the link for the "design your own shoe" section has great effects buy subtly changing the shoes color when it is rolled over.

For my example of a website with poor uses of rollovers I chose shocku.com. The few ones that it does have are tacky and a little distracting. For example, the rollovers for the links on the home page appear to have electricity running through them. Also the links for the videos is a little distracting. When the numbers are rolled over they shake continuously. This in my opinion is a poor example of how to use rollovers and other animations correctly.
